You no longer need to leave your home to attend an interview—just log into Zoom, and you're in. But even in this virtual space, the importance of dressing your best is unchanged. But that raises an interesting question: How do you present yourself professionally in the new age of remote work?

1. Opt for Business Casual, Always

When dressing for a Zoom interview, business casual should be your go-to choice unless otherwise indicated. Business casual attire includes items such as blouses, button-downs, and blazers. Even though you're at home, avoid overly relaxed attire like plain t-shirts or sweatpants. I would even suggest that you avoid too far in the other direction as well: vests, fancy cuff links, etc. Remember, comfort is important, but you shouldn't forget professionalism either.

2. Colors That Pop (But Not Too Much)

Neutral tones like black, gray, navy blue, and tan are reliable choices for Zoom interviews because they reduce distraction and keep the focus on you. However, don’t shy away from adding a pop of color—it can bring energy to your look (and tbh, more laid-back companies appreciate the subtle personality shining through). The most important thing is to ensure contrast. If your background is light, avoid wearing white; if it’s dark, avoid black.

3. Makeup and Grooming: Slightly More is Better

When it comes to makeup, remember that webcams often wash out your features. Ladies (and gents, too!), this is one of the rare times where applying a little more makeup than usual is advisable. Subtle enhancements like bronzer, blush, or a slightly bolder lip color can help you look lively and engaged on screen. Just make sure you look at yourself in your camera or a mirror first so that you can get an idea of what the makeup + lighting will look like to the interviewer.

Tales of mishaps are too common in this Zoom-centric world, so wear pants, a skirt, or something professional on your bottom half. Always.

Lighting also plays a critical role—natural light works wonders, it's my go-to for the main source of lighting when I can plan it that way. However, a well-placed lamp can also help brighten your area.

9. Test Your Setup Beforehand

Testing is key to avoiding any technical mishaps. This is especially true if this is a new set-up. I can't stress this enough, the last thing you want to do is be ill-prepared going into a video interview. Run a quick Zoom test call to see how you appear on screen. Check your camera, sound, and lighting to make sure everything works as it should.

Also, ensure you have any necessary documents within reach during the interview. I have a habit of allowing several minutes of prep before any video calls so I can load any tabs or browser windows that I may need to reference on the call.

10. Keep Your Frame Professional

On Zoom, your head and shoulders should take up most of the frame. Avoid slouching or letting the camera angle cut off parts of your face. Sit up straight and maintain a professional posture throughout the interview.

Most of the time you'll want to stay about 3 feet away from your camera, give or take a few inches. You don't want to be an on-screen giant or a tiny ant.
